Jonas Römmig
CINEMATOGRAPHERIn the early nineties, at the tender age of eight Jonas is caught cold when a classmate hands him a video camera.
Decades after this initial spark, after acquiring a fundamental cineastic education and completing a master’s degree at the Babelsberg Film University, Jonas has shot long and short documentaries as well as fictional films that have been successfully screened at international festivals.
The visual language of his works is always consistent and form-conscious.
There are purist documentary-like images as well as highly stylized tableaus and long takes.
Yet it is the plot of the film that is decisive.
Jonas’s camerawork is wholly unpretentious, in the sense that beauty in itself is not enough for him.
Rather than the immaculate, smooth images we encounter every day, he is interested in a multi-layered visual language that can be anything but arbitrary. His passion lies in the search for the right images that serve an aesthetic dictated by the subject and at the same time address something that lies beneath the surface.
